Save your boyfriend from the water at the Hoornse Vaart swimming pool in Alkmaar

Save Your Boyfriend

Save Your Boyfriend

Save Your Little Friend is one of the five activities within the programme Swimming is cool from Alkmaar Sport. With Swim is cool, pupils discover how versatile and fun moving in the water can be. Each activity has its own goal and approach, but together they form one complete and playful physical activity programme for schools.

Raising pupils' awareness

Save your Little Boyfriend is a project by Alkmaar Sport is offered to all children from Year 1 to Year 6. The programme focuses on teaching various survival techniques, such as wet and dry rescues, to be able to save yourself and others in perilous situations. The aim is to make children aware of the dangers of water and to give them the knowledge and skills to act safely.

4 components

The programme consists of four parts of approximately 20 minutes each, which are given in the 25-metre pool and/or 50-metre pool. The children learn how to act should they unexpectedly fall into the water and how to rescue a friend who has got into difficulty. The programme is intended for children who hold an A swimming certificate.

  1. Part 1: What do you do if you fall into the water with your bike? Or if you fall out of a boat, or the boat capsizes?
  2. Part 2: What do you do if you or your friend falls through the ice?
  3. Part 3: How do you recover someone from the bottom and apply various rescue towing techniques?
  4. Section 4: How do I rescue ‘my boyfriend’ from the water without having to jump in myself.

Invaluable

The survival techniques taught during the programme are invaluable, especially in a water-rich country like the Netherlands. Even if a child holds a swimming certificate, they can still get into trouble. Think, for example, of children who end up near a ditch while playing, or children who fall into the water during a day out at the beach.

The Save your Little Friend programme is therefore an important initiative aimed at helping children to save themselves and others if necessary. The programme is taught by expert instructors who ensure that the children learn how to act in emergency situations in a fun and playful way.

Valuable addition

Alkmaar Sport works together with Variopool to make the programme possible and to ensure that as many children as possible get the chance to take part. The programme is a valuable addition to regular swimming lessons and provides children with the knowledge and skills they need to safely enjoy everything water has to offer.
