At the Hoornse Vaart swimming pool in Alkmaar, we not only offer recreational activities for schools, but also technical lessons. For instance, we collaborate on the Jan Arentsz Sterrenproject, where pupils can put the theory they have learned about space travel into practice in our swimming pool.
The Star Project is an annual initiative of csg Jan Arentsz, where pupils attend theory lessons about space travel for several weeks. They then come to our swimming pool to put this knowledge into practice. They do this through various activities, focusing on weightlessness and the limitations it brings.
For example, during one of the modules, the pupils have to hammer nails into planks or assemble PVC pipes underwater while experiencing weightlessness. If they were to drop these materials in space, they would be lost forever or pose a major hazard to the ISS. During another module, they have to retrieve a hose underwater, blow it clear, and then quickly exhale the air from their lungs into jerry cans to make them float.
Snorkelling is also covered to simulate weightlessness. Pupils perform various exercises that you could also do in space, such as doing a forward roll or rotating around the longitudinal axis. In addition, they perform rotations around the body axes and swim on their backs underwater while rotating their body axis.
Alongside the Stars Project, we also take part in Girlsday, where girls aged 10 to 15 get hands-on experience of technical professions. In this way, we want to encourage not only sportsmanship, but also technical skills among young people.
