The Sea is one of the five activities within the programme Swimming is cool from Alkmaar Sport. With Swim is cool, pupils discover how versatile and fun moving in the water can be. Each activity has its own goal and approach, but together they form one complete and playful physical activity programme for schools.
During the theme The Sea, children learn through play how to deal safely and confidently with the dangers of the sea. They discover what a rip current is, how currents work, and what the various beach flags mean. This gives them an insight into what is and isn't safe when swimming in open water.
In addition, the pupils are introduced to the underwater world. They learn the basic techniques of snorkelling so that they can look around relaxed underwater and enjoy everything there is to see. On rescue boards, they practise how to move across the water and how they could help someone out of the sea. We also work with buoys in the water, so that children learn to orientate themselves and handle equipment safely.
To make the theme extra fun, we are incorporating various games into the programme. Think of noughts and crosses and connect four on the bottom of the swimming pool. Through these playful tasks, children learn to stay under water longer, develop handy tricks, and above all, experience just how much fun you can have in and around the water. In this way, De Zee combines important safety skills with a heavy dose of swimming fun.
