ASM is one of the five activities within the programme Swimming is cool from Alkmaar Sport. With Swim is cool, pupils discover how versatile and fun moving in the water can be. Each activity has its own goal and approach, but together they form one complete and playful physical activity programme for schools.
The Athletic Skills Model, or ASM, is an innovative model that helps children to engage in varied movement. Compare it to the Eatwell Guide for nutrition, but for movement. The model consists of a disc of ten fundamental movement skills that recur in various sports. Take football for example: this features the fundamental skills of kicking, shooting and aiming, running and moving, and balancing and falling. In tennis, we see the fundamental skills of throwing, catching, hitting and aiming, and balancing and falling recurring.
At ‘Swim is cool’, we bring the Athletic Skills Model to the swimming pool. We apply the disk of ten in the water, allowing children to playfully discover various forms of movement and develop their motor skills. Through this versatile approach, children become not only better swimmers, but also all-round athletes.
